Key Points

Keeping a gratitude journal is helpful, even if you start off writing the same few things each day. Even if you are not going through something and everything is going great, it's good to start a gratitude journal, because you can start the habit, and when you need encouragement later, you can look back at your triumphs and remember what's good about your life.

The stop, drop and roll journal is a method you can use when you're feeling like, "I'm not good enough" or stressed or mad or hurt:

  1. Stop in the moment that you are feeling that way. Write down what it is you're feeling right at the moment, and why you're feeling it. Explain why you are getting emotional-- what was said or done, and who was involved?

  2. Drop by praying, meditating, or giving yourself some quiet time around this process. Then think back decade by decade. Determine one to two major events that happened in each decade that made you feel the same way. And it is very important to pick a very powerful event in that decade. Once you identify those major events in your life that have the same exact feeling. Then you can learn how to release it. You might write a love letter, you might talk to the person and and forgive yourself for feeling that way, there's any number of tools during the drop portion that will allow you to release that feeling and begin healing.

  3. Roll away from your initial reaction and feelings of the situation, from the old way of behaving and responding into a new way of behaving and responding.
