Key Points

Things go so much better, and we end up exactly where we're supposed to be and have the impact and influence that we're supposed to have when we do things the way that God is asking them to do it and making him a priority as we're going on about our day to day.

We sometimes feel a pull, or a calling to do something different to change something to shift something, but we're afraid of that unknown but when we're led to do it, then we're following the right path, even if we don't know all the steps, you know you have to take one step at a time. So sometimes the top of the staircase is dark, so it's foggy sometimes, you only can see two steps ahead of you and that's where the faith comes in.

When you find yourself at a point where things in your life are just no longer working like they once did, it's time to shift. Things are happening to get our attention. We ignore it instead of asking, 'Why is this happening?' And I think it's because we've been pursuing the wrong place.

Some of the things that get in the way of us making shifts:

  • Being attached to doing things the old way that we've always done them, or what we had in mind. I also like to say we've been should-ed on for too long. Like you should do this... Some folks share their opinions with good intentions, but sometimes we won't shift, because we want to live up to the expectations that we have either set for ourselves, or some of the expectations that other people have put on us.

  • Fear. We're scared to try something new, we're scared to fail or scared to succeed. And many of us are really just dressing our fear up as faith, like "I'm gonna pray about it," but that's procrastination— that's not faith, that's fear.

Often, high performing leaders don't have a safe space where they can openly admit that they're burned out, feeling inadequate, or uncertain about how to move forward. And we also if we're believers we can also struggle to incorporate our faith, you know into our professional roles in our decision making. You have leaders that just don't want to do what they do anymore but there's no safe space because we have to have all the answers. You need somewhere where you can take your cape off and get refilled.

What You Can Do

Fear can sometimes be your friend but just don't allow it to paralyze you— keep moving forward. Find somebody who's done what you're trying to do, and allow them to tell you what to do first and can you just take that one step, even if you're scared.

Don't determine success based on what you should do or what somebody else thinks you should do, but you define for yourself what it is that feels good you define for yourself.

Understand that your shifting season is going to be more about being than doing. That's why they call us human beings and not doings. Because so much of what you're going to do or even have the capacity to do is predicated on who are you going to become. Focus on the areas you need to develop to become a better version of yourself.
