Kathy De La Torre is a domestic abuse survivor and hosts The Inspire Café podcast about overcoming adversity with a positive outlook on life. In this podcast, she shares how she overcame a physically abusive relationship without being permanently shattered, and 3 ways you can quit re-living traumatic memories that may haunt you.

Key Points

60% of men and 50% of women suffer from at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.

Two types of categories of trauma- the historical recount (the facts) and the emotional recount (story).

There are many different kinds of trauma. But your memories are intangible. Memories do not have power over you.

What You Can Do

3 steps to stop re-living your traumatic memories:

  1. Become aware of your physical responses.

  2. Ask yourself: What is triggering my bodily and emotional reaction?

  3. Stop and pause. Remember that your memories are intangible and recognize where you are, that you are in a safe place.

Protect yourself from your triggers. There may be some situations, movies etc. you need to stay away from.

Forgive your abuser and forgive yourself.

Be kind to yourself. Healing takes time.

Don't be so afraid of change. Trying new things will stretch you and lift your self-esteem.
